Two years after opening the William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, UT Southwestern Medical Center determined the facility must expand to keep up with growing patient needs. The project added a 12-story bed tower and diagnostic podium built around and above the existing facility. After lateral and movement analyses, Walter P Moore provided a solution to connect the podium expansion to the existing structure. This eliminated the need for an expansion joint and allowed for additional square footage beyond the original expansion plan to be used for an expansion of the emergency room, additional operating rooms, and more diagnostic space for the hospital. Walter P Moore, in partnership with affiliate firm, Martinez Moore Engineers worked closely with the design team and UTSW to deliver this state-of-the-art hospital expansion. The result allows the hospital to serve the community more effectively with higher capacity, improved patient access and comprehensive healthcare services.
