Phase One of the JBHS phased bond program upgrades included tackling the campuses dire need of additional parking and updated tennis facilities. Due to a previously established interlocal agreement between AISD and the City of Austin, the district had parking requirements to comply with. This agreement also necessitated a net reduction in impervious cover since JBHS rests atop the environmentally sensitive Edwards Aquifer.

The solution was a four-level structure that addressed parking, tennis courts, and the campuses footprint. Levels 1, 2 and 3 provide parking for 486 vehicles, while the 4th (roof) level features eight new tennis courts. This innovative addition replaced the need for an expansive surface lot, provides far more parking for students and faculty than before, and keeps JBHS’ overall footprint below the 25% impervious cover requirement.
