Anna Hiss Gymnasium, constructed in 1930 as the first women’s gymnasium on campus, is a vital link to the University’s rich history. However, underutilized and unmaintained, the gym required major renovations to support any occupant, let alone the technology driven programs that set their sights on making this campus structure home. Design and construction were performed in two phases. Renovation of the south wing occurred in Phase I while the north wing renovation followed in Phase II. The South wing consisted of selective demolition to allow for the addition of a new, more robust slab to support large and heavy robotics. Phase II focused on renovation of the North wing and the extension of the newly created mezzanine from the South wing. Together the 63,461 gross square foot facility creates large open spaces, conference rooms, laboratories, shop and assembly areas, and offices for a host of UT departments and programs.
